I miss the old Newnan

Vent #2 - (this is kinda therapeutic, and theres nothing better than FREE therapy) haha ok but seriously.... back to my vent.... - I love Newnan but I miss the old Newnan. So many small businesses have went under and are continuing to go under. It's sad. Before long we are going to be some huge city, and it makes me sad. I remember years ago, when Newnan was small, and there were no BIG stores here. When you went out, most people knew each other, traffic was a breeze for the most part, it was safe, and really kinda just a nice, quiet southern place to live. Now its hectic, traffic is horrible, too many people here, too many red lights that aren't synched, it's a nightmare. I hate having to leave my house to go anywhere now. Whats something you miss about old Newnan? How it used to be here? Let's reminisce.... Valarie Hayes via Facebook

My family moved here in 1977 - for a "nice"dinner you went to the steak house - for Christmas you either shopped at K-Mart; Wal-mart(small) or at Kessler's on the square (which is now Golden's). And you knew everybody while you were out and about. YES, I missed OLD NEWNAN!!!!

I moved here in 1996 It is a very rare occasion for me to go some where and not see someone I know. Most of my friends think it's usually as I didn't grow up here, and for some they did and they hardly ever see someone they know. I have never lived in such a place and it makes me happy that I do now and I will never leave Newnan is Now my Home.

  3. i was born here in '67, i miss being dropped off on the square on saturdays while my parents ran errands. i ate at lee king, looked at toys at kesslers, drooled over the military paraphernalia at the pawn shop, stared at the go carts in johnsons hardware, got a coke at thriftown and then waited for the train to smash quarters down by the old depot... i saw star wars seven times at the alamo and will never forget the voice on the other end of the line when you called to see what was playing, "now featured at the alamo theater.." i could stand on my porch on martin street and see the christmas lights strung from the top of the courthouse down to each of the four corners on the square... man i miss that...

  5. I remember the Dianah Shop, Hartman's, Barnett St Johns, Mansours, Western Auto, Bruners, Kesslers, Red Dot, Smith's Groceries, Alamo, Carter's Men Shop. And we only went to town on Saturdays. Now I've really told my age. Those were the days.

  7. I remember a store by the name of Cook's (dress shop)being there but that was before your time, I can't remember what was there next. Let me think on it and get back with you. I also remember White's Drug store, Otasco was Economy Auto, there was a Cate's Drugs, the Fire Department was where Smart Solutions is now, I think the Fire Chief was Vernon Kidd.

Kathy Belk's was in that building before Cook;s. Interesting side note if you go up and look at the front door. Left up the rug and look under it. Belk's is still printed on the pavement.

  9. I was talking about Bill Cook's Mens Shop where Red Neck Gourmet is and next door was Mattie Cook's Dress Shop, his wife. These stores were on the North square. Cook's Office Supply is now where Belks was on the East square. Dr. Yancey's (Dentist)office was upstairs over/between Lee King Pharmacy and Belks.

I also walked to Gibson's with my grandmother... eating at Cannon's ( opposite end of the Newnan Plaza) ...then sometimes we would eat at Lee King ... sitting on the stools...and good ole Kessler's .... my grandfather was "Santa" there for as long as I can remember... so I basically lived there when he was there.. smelling the popcorn & playing upstairs with the toys... I miss those days... where , oh where is Our Old Newnan? We miss you so.....

  16. What a treat it was when moma brought home a six pack of pepsi home and I got to have one or going to Joes Store on Lagrange street where apt. complex is now just up from NHS, and get some candy. Or some of those hot peanuts at Kesslers. And buying some new artificial fishing worms at Johnson Hdw. Seeing Gone With The Wind at the alamo.

My grandmother did all her shopping in Newnan. We live in Heard County and when we would go to Newnan with her we thought we would never get there. She always shopped at the clothing store that was on Temple Ave. and also on the square. Then she would always take us to eat at the old Sprayberrys and we would get so excited about getting a bottled coke.

My Grandfather playing checkers at the courthouse and visited while my grandmother and I shopped at Bruners, Mansours, The Diana shop and of course Kesslers then lunch at Lee Kings! By the time we left the square he had invited 20 people over for Sunday dinner after church. I will always miss the best pizza on the entire earth at the Bistro! :) Those were the days! ♥
